Fancy some water sports?

A variety of lakes in the Allgäu region

The colours of the Allgäu: lush green meadows, soft brown cows and ... refreshing blue. Numerous lakes and ponds lie embedded in the gentle foothills of the Alps and are popular destinations.

On hot days, 10 lakes within 10 km entice you to take to a refreshing dip in their cool waters. Sports enthusiasts, on the other hand, are drawn straight to the nearby Hopfensee Lake. Boating, stand-up paddling, surfing and sailing, as well as fishing, make it a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. During a crossing with the MS "Füssen" over the neighbouring Forggensee Lake, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Or how about an idyllic hike along the Weissensee lakeshore?

Hopfen am See/Füssen

The Hopfensee Lake

Our Hopfensee Lake is a so-called dead-ice lake, which was formed during the Ice Age by the deepening of the Lech glaciers tongues. Its surface is around 2 km² and, in some places, it reaches a depth of about 10 m. With a temperature of 20-25 degrees Celsius, it ranks among the warmest Bavarian foothill lakes.

At 5.8 km, the lakeside path is ideal for Nordic walking tours and for strolling. The sun-drenched lakeside promenade is often referred to as the ‘Allgäu Riviera’. There is a lido with a kiosk and beer garden, boat hire, stand-up paddling, surfing and sailing school, fishing and mini golf.

Distance: approx. 500 m

Rieden am Forggensee

Faulensee Lake

Faulensee Lake is a secluded moor pond that is surrounded by unspoiled countryside. It can be reached from the hotel via a beautiful hiking trail through the Hopfen forest in approx. 45 min.

It offers fun for the whole family with its small bathing meadow and bathing island. The huge network of hiking and cycling trails makes Faulensee Lake an ideal destination for excursions. Food is available at Raini's Faulenseehütte.

Distance: approx. 3 km

Füssen

The Forggensee Lake

With its 15.2 km² surface area, the Forggensee Lake is one of the biggest lakes in Bavaria and the largest reservoir in Germany.

From June to mid-October, the round trips on the boat operated by the Forggensee-Schifffahrt company will give you a unique view of the Allgäu Alps and Neuschwanstein Castle. Kanu-Kini (canoe, kayak and dragon boat hire) and a sailing school are located right on the lake.

In Dietringen, everyone will be able to find a comfortable spot on the spacious sunbathing lawn in the bathing area. There is a kiosk that sells food and drinks and, so, can cater to your physical well-being. Your little water rats will enjoy romping in the children's playground. Dogs are not allowed.

Weissensee Lake/Füssen

The Weissensee Lake

At a length of 2.4 km and a width of 600 m, the lake invites you to hike around it. The delightful circular path around Weissensee Lake leads through a natural rock arch that resembles a gateway, the so-called ‘Törle’. To the south, a hiking trail leads through the forest to the Alatsee Lake and the Salober grass mountain which is farmed.

The Weissensee bathing area, on the west end waterfront - with its gently sloping shore, sunny lawns, children's playground, restaurants, table tennis and outdoor gym - is popular with families with children. There are moreover a number of smaller bathing places on the north shore; surfers and stand-up paddlers likewise use the lake. The Weissensee bathing area can be accessed free of charge.

Distance: approx. 10 km

Füssen

The Alatsee Lake

This exceptionally beautiful mountain lake is near the Austrian border on the Salober mountain ridge and, with its crystal clear water, is an ideal hiking and bathing destination for all nature lovers. A special feature is the layer of algae lying at a depth of 8-15 m.

Alatsee Lake is well-known from the German language crime novel ‘Seegrund’ (Lake Bottom) that is set in the Allgäu region.

Distance: approx. 10 km

schwansee allgäu

Hohenschwangau/Schwangau

The Schwansee or Swan Lake

Set against a magnificent backdrop, in the middle of the former Hohenschwangau castle park and at the foot of the Alps, the Schwansee is tucked away from roads and traffic.

The wet meadows, moorlands and meagre patches of grass that surround the Schwansee are a perfect habitat for rare plants such as enzian, bird's-eye primrose or various species of orchid. Since 1956, the area around the lake has been designated as a nature reserve.

It is an ideal bathing lake with an outdoor bathing area and spacious sunbathing lawns. Its moor water is of the best quality and warms up quickly because the lake is not very deep.

Distance: approx. 7.5 km + 0.7 km on foot

Hohenschwangau

The Alpsee Lake

Set below Hohenschwangau Castle, enchanting, mysterious and up to 62 m deep - the Alpsee Lake. King Ludwig II's favourite bathing lake is considered to be one of the cleanest, but also coldest and vibrant emerald green bathing lakes in Germany.

It is located in the middle of a wooded landscape directly at the foot of the Säuling mountain and in the immediate vicinity of the royal castles. A romantic circular path runs partly along the shore, partly high above along the lake (height difference 50 m, duration approx. 1:30 hours, suitable for children) and offers a fantastic view of the lake and the royal castles.
